چکیده

This paper introduces …scal increasing returns, through endogenous labor income tax rates as in Schmitt-Grohe and Uribe (1997), into the overlapping generations model with endogenous labor, consumption in both periods of life and homothetic preferences (e.g., Lloyd-Braga, Nourry and Venditti, 2007). We show that under numerical calibrations of the parameters, local indeterminacy can occur for distortionary tax rates that are empirically plausible for the U.S. economy, provided that the elasticity of capital-labor substitution and the wage elasticity of the labor supply are large enough, and the elasticity of intertemporal substitution in consumption is slightly greater than unity. These indeterminacy conditions on elasticities are similar to those obtained within in…nite horizon models and from this point of view, Diamond meets Ramsey again. However, our indeterminacy result requires irrealistic values of the propensity to consume of the young out of Corresponding author: Fax: 86-21-52302560. Email address: [email protected] (Y. Zhang).

Indeterminacy in dynamic models: When Diamond meets Ramsey

In this paper, we consider an aggregate overlapping generations model with endogenous labor, consumption in both periods of life, homothetic preferences and productive external effects coming from the average capital and labor. We show that under realistic calibrations of the parameters, in particular a large enough share of first period consumption over the wage income, local indeterminacy of ...

A Discrete Economic Growth Model with Endogenous Labor

This paper proposes an alternative approach to economic growth with endogenous labor supply. The production side is the same as the Solow model, the Ramsey model, and the Diamond model. But we deal with the behavior of consumers differently from the traditional approaches by proposing a concept of disposable income (which is the sum of the wealth available for use, the current income from inter...

Useful Government Spending and Macroeconomic (In)stability under Balanced-Budget Rules∗

It has been shown that an otherwise standard one-sector real business cycle model may exhibit indeterminacy and sunspots under a balanced-budget rule that consists of fixed and wasteful government spending and proportional income taxation. However, the economy always displays saddle-path stability and equilibrium uniqueness if the government finances endogenous public expenditures with a consta...

Evaluation of the Most Important Factors Affecting the Income of Taxes in the Economy of Iran with the Approach of TVP DMA Models

Due to the government’s roles and responsibilities in economy for financing public services through taxes as sustainable revenue, this study investigates not only the effective factors on tax revenues and its theoretical bases but also selects the related important effective variables in Iran’s economy during the period (1971-2017) by using dynamic models TVP - DMA. The classic models focus on ...

Indeterminacy, labor and capital income taxes, and non-linear tax schedules

Using a finance-constrained model, as in Barinci and Cheron (2001), this paper examines the role of procyclical and countercyclical tax rates on labor and capital income in aggregate fluctuations driven by the beliefs of agents. The analysis shows that the cyclicality of labor income tax rate has the monotonically negative impact on the possibility of indeterminacy, while the non-monotonic rela...
